Over time, this second bacterium became the chloroplast.
Chloroplasts are like tiny solar panels. They capture sunlight and use it to make sugar from water and carbon dioxide.
This is why plants can make their own food.
Two Amazing Energy Factories
Today, plant cells contain bothmitochondria and chloroplasts.
Each has a different job.
Chloroplasts capture energy from the sun and store it in the form of sugar.
Mitochondria take that sugar and convert it into ATP—the energy that powers every living cell.
Think of it this way:

Humans don’t have chloroplasts, so we can’t make sugar from sunlight.

Our mitochondria then convert those nutrients into ATP, just as plant mitochondria do.

One of the most fascinating discoveries in biology is that the mitochondria inside your cells and the mitochondria inside a tree, a flower, or a blade of grass all trace back to the same ancient bacterial ancestor.
In other words, every human and every plant on Earth shares part of the same ancient biological history.
